Prove your right to work
Employers must check that you can work in the UK before you start. If you have an eVisa, you give them a share code.
Mandatory Applies to: Whole UK

Who handles it
Decides visa, settlement and citizenship applications and manages eVisas for people coming to or living in the UK.
Step by step
- British or Irish citizens: show your passport or Irish passport card. It can be current or expired.
- Everyone else: get a share code online by signing in to your UKVI account or using your BRP details.
- Give the share code to your employer so they can check online what work you can do and for how long.
- If you prefer, you can show eligible immigration documents instead. Your employer cannot reject you for not using a share code.
What you need
- Your passport or national identity card linked to your UKVI account, or your BRP number
- British or Irish citizens without a passport: a UK or Irish birth or adoption certificate plus an official letter showing your name and National Insurance number
- A current passport with a Home Office endorsement, if you are using documents instead of a share code
Common mistakes
- Using an expired passport with a Home Office endorsement: it must be current.
- Starting work before your employer has checked your right to work.
