Claim a tax refund

If you paid too much tax through your job or pension, HMRC usually sends a tax calculation letter (P800) after the tax year ends. You can also claim for job expenses, savings interest, foreign income and more.

Applies to: Whole UK

Step by step

  1. After the tax year ends on 5 April, watch for a P800 or Simple Assessment letter. They are sent between June and March.
  2. If your P800 says you can claim online, use the GOV.UK bank transfer service, your personal tax account or the HMRC app.
  3. If the letter says you will get a cheque, you do not need to do anything: it arrives by post.
  4. If you have no letter but think you overpaid, use the GOV.UK tool to see how to claim for your situation (job, expenses, leaving the UK, savings and more).
  5. If you think the amounts in your calculation are wrong, contact HMRC and say which figures should change.

What you need

  • The reference number on your P800 letter
  • Your National Insurance number
  • UK bank account details, if you want the money by transfer
  • Your P45 if you changed jobs during the year

Common mistakes

  • Expecting a refund before HMRC has your income details from your employer, pension provider or benefits office.
  • Waiting for a P800 if you are in Self Assessment: your bill is adjusted through your tax return instead.
  • Not giving your P45 to your new employer, which can leave you on the wrong tax code.
