Who handles it

Step by step

  1. Sign in on GOV.UK. If you do not have sign in details yet, you can create them there.
  2. Prove your identity if asked, usually with photo ID.
  3. Check your tax code, your Income Tax estimate and the income HMRC has on record for you.
  4. Use it to claim a tax refund, find your National Insurance number or UTR, and tell HMRC about a new name or address.

What you need

  • Photo ID such as a passport or driving licence, if you need to prove your identity
  • Your sign in details (you can create them the first time)

Common mistakes

  • Not checking your tax code after starting a new job, so you pay the wrong amount of tax for months.
  • Forgetting to tell HMRC about a change of address or name.
