Take a vehicle off the road (SORN)
If you keep a vehicle off the road and untaxed, for example in a garage, you must tell DVLA with a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN).
Mandatory Applies to: Whole UK
Go to the official website: gov.uk
Official links
Who handles it
Holds driver and vehicle records in Great Britain: driving licences, vehicle tax, SORN and the V5C log book.
Step by step
- Apply online on GOV.UK if the vehicle is registered in your name, when you are ready to take it off the road.
- Use the 11 digit number from your log book (V5C) or the 16 digit reference on your tax reminder.
- The SORN starts straight away, unless you apply in the month the tax expires: then it starts on the first day of the next month.
- Any full months of tax left are refunded. To use the vehicle on the road again, tax it first.
What you need
- Log book (V5C) in your name or a recent vehicle tax reminder
- Form V890 if you apply by post or the vehicle is not registered to you
Common mistakes
- Making a SORN for a vehicle you have already sold. Tell DVLA about the sale instead.
- Parking a SORN vehicle on a public road. It must be kept off the road.
- Applying with a wrong address on the V5C. Change the address first, then make the SORN.
