Step by step

  1. Apply online on GOV.UK as soon as you move. Changing only the address is free.
  2. If you also need to change your name, apply by post instead.
  3. You can keep driving while you wait for the new licence.
  4. Also update the address on your vehicle log book (V5C) and on any vehicle tax Direct Debit.

What you need

  • Your current driving licence
  • Your new address
  • Photo ID if asked to prove your identity when you sign in

Common mistakes

  • Not telling DVLA at all. You can be fined for not reporting a change of address.
  • Updating the licence but forgetting the V5C, so reminders and fines go to your old address.
  • Trying to register a foreign address: if you move abroad, contact the licensing authority in your new country instead.
