Step by step

  1. Check if you can make a new Housing Benefit claim. If not, claim help with rent through Universal Credit.
  2. Apply through your local council, or as part of a Pension Credit claim if you are eligible for it.
  3. Send the evidence the council asks for. Having it ready makes the claim faster.
  4. Apply to your council separately for Council Tax Reduction. Each council runs its own scheme.
  5. Report any change of circumstances straight away.

What you need

  • Your rent amount, what it includes and your landlord's or agent's details
  • Your most recent payslips
  • Bank or building society statements for the last 2 full months
  • Proof of other income or investments
  • Your tenancy agreement or a letter from your landlord, if you rent privately

Common mistakes

  • Applying for Housing Benefit when you should claim Universal Credit.
  • Sending copies when the council asks for original documents.
  • Assuming Council Tax Reduction is automatic: you need to apply to your council.
