Who handles it
Runs Universal Credit, State Pension, disability benefits and Jobcentre Plus, and issues National Insurance numbers.
Step by step
- Gather accurate details of your income, savings, benefits and household costs.
- Choose one of the calculators listed on GOV.UK.
- See which benefits you could get, roughly how much, and how starting work or a change in your life would affect them.
- Apply for each benefit through its official service. A local benefits adviser can also help.
What you need
- Your income and your partner's, for example payslips
- Details of your savings
- Current benefits and pensions of everyone living with you
- Your outgoings, such as rent, mortgage and childcare
- Your Council Tax bill
Common mistakes
- Treating the result as a decision: it is only an estimate.
- Relying on it if you are not a British or Irish citizen, a student or living abroad: the results will not be accurate.
