Who handles it
The government department responsible for immigration, passports, policing and security. Most public enquiries go through its agencies.
Step by step
- Tell a Border Force officer you want to claim asylum when you arrive, or claim as soon as possible if you are already in the UK.
- Attend the screening: you are photographed, fingerprinted and asked who you are and why you are claiming. Ask for an interpreter if you need one.
- Receive your asylum registration card (ARC) and return the questionnaire by the deadline if you are sent one.
- Attend the asylum interview (often by video) and send your original identity documents beforehand.
- Follow the reporting instructions and tell the Home Office if your details change while you wait for a decision.
What you need
- Passports and travel documents for you and your dependants, if you have them.
- Other ID, such as identity cards, birth and marriage certificates or school records.
- Proof of your UK address if you are already living here, such as a bank statement or Council Tax notice.
- Anything else that supports your claim, with English translations showing who translated them.
Common mistakes
- Waiting to claim: applications are more likely to be refused if you delay.
- Giving false information: it can lead to up to 2 years in prison or removal from the UK.
- Not telling the Home Office when your situation or address changes.
