Step by step

  1. Create your GOV.UK One Login the first time a service asks for it, with an email address and a way to get security codes.
  2. If the service needs to check who you are, prove your identity with the GOV.UK One Login app, by answering security questions online or at a Post Office.
  3. Your identity is saved, so you do not have to prove it again for other services that use One Login.
  4. Sign in to your One Login to change your details or see the services you have used.

What you need

  • An email address and a phone or app to receive security codes.
  • Photo ID such as a UK passport, a non-UK passport with a biometric chip, a UK photocard driving licence or a UK biometric residence permit or card.
  • For the app: a smartphone with a working camera and a recent operating system.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming One Login works everywhere: some services (for example Universal Credit) still use their own sign-in, such as Government Gateway.
  • Giving up when the app does not work with your phone or ID: you can also prove your identity with security questions online or at a Post Office.
